Supplies

  • Clear contact paper

  • Tissue paper squares in various colors

  • Paper plates or cardstock

  • Scissors (adult use as needed)

  • Hole punch

  • String or ribbon

Instructions

  1. Cut the center out of a paper plate, leaving a ring-shaped frame.

  2. Attach a piece of clear contact paper to the back of the frame, sticky side facing up.

  3. Let the children place colorful pieces of tissue paper onto the sticky surface.

  4. Cover with another piece of contact paper to seal it.

  5. Trim the edges.

  6. Punch a hole at the top and add a string for hanging.

  7. Hang the finished suncatcher in a sunny window.

Talk About It

As the sunlight shines through the colors, ask:

  • What happens when the sun shines through our suncatcher?

  • How can we shine God's love to others?

  • What are some ways we can be kind and helpful?

Extension Activity

Invite children to name one way they can "shine" this week:

  • Sharing toys

  • Helping a friend

  • Saying kind words

  • Praying for someone

  • Obeying parents or teachers

Explain that just as sunlight shines through the colorful tissue paper, God's love shines through us when we show kindness, love, and obedience. God uniquely creates each child and can reflect His light in their own special way.

Shining God's Light

Children love bright colors and sunshine, which makes this God's Light Suncatcher activity a fun way to introduce an important truth from the Bible. In Matthew 5:14, Jesus tells us, "You are the light of the world." Even young children can learn that God wants His love to shine through them. As children create their colorful suncatchers, talk with them about what happens when sunlight shines through the window. The light becomes bright and beautiful. Similarly, when we follow Jesus, His love shines through our words and actions.

For young children, shining God's light can look simple. It might mean sharing a toy, helping a friend, listening to a parent, or speaking kind words. These small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone's day.

When the suncatchers are finished, hang them in a sunny window where children can see them often. Each time the sunlight shines through the colors, it can serve as a reminder that God loves them and can share His love with others.

Talk About It:

  • How can we show God's love to our friends?

  • What are some kind things we can do this week?

  • How does it feel when someone is kind to us?

Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for loving us. Help us shine Your light through our words and actions. Show us ways to be kind and share Your love with others. Amen.

"Every time your child sees their suncatcher sparkle in the sunlight, they can remember that Jesus loves them and His light can shine through them wherever they go, as they share His love with others."
