Children around three to five years old are at a wonderful age. They ask big questions, think deeply, and are beginning to understand relationships more personally. These questions make it a sweet time to talk with them about Jesus, not just as a Bible story character, but as someone who knows them, loves them, and wants a relationship with them.
Jesus Cares Deeply About Children
Jesus clearly showed that children are important to Him. When adults tried to push children away, Jesus stopped them and said,
“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:14)
This scripture helps children understand that Jesus welcomes them right now, not later when they’re older. They matter to Him today.
You might tell a child:
“Jesus is happy you came to Him. He loves spending time with you.”
Helping Children Understand a Relationship With Jesus
A relationship with Jesus can be explained like a close friendship. Jesus invites us to know Him and trust Him.
Jesus said,
“I call you my friends.” (John 15:15)
Help children see that Jesus wants them to talk to Him, listen to Him, and walk with Him every day. They don’t need perfect words or behavior, just an open heart.
Teaching Children How to Pray
Prayer is simply talking with Jesus. The Bible reminds us,
“The Lord is near to all who call on him.” (Psalm 145:18)
Encourage children to pray honestly. Let them know Jesus cares about what matters to them, big or small.
Simple prayers children can use include:
“Jesus, thank You for loving me.”
“Jesus, please help me today.”
“Jesus, thank You for being with me.”
Helping Children Talk to Others About Jesus
Children often share what they love without fear or pressure. When they understand Jesus’ love, it naturally overflows to others.
Jesus said,
“Love one another as I have loved you.” (John 13:34)
Children can share Jesus’ love by:
Telling a friend that Jesus loves them
Sharing how they pray when they feel scared or sad
Showing kindness, forgiveness, and care
Remind them that their actions often speak louder than their words.
Helping Children Know Their Value
Children sometimes feel small or unimportant. Scripture reminds us that God sees them clearly.
“I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14)
Help children know that Jesus created them with care and purpose. Their age does not limit their value in God’s eyes.
A Gentle Encouragement for Adults
Adults play a decisive role in shaping a child’s faith. When children see Jesus’ love lived out, they learn to trust Him more deeply.
“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)
By listening, answering gently, and modeling faith, we help children build a strong, lasting relationship with Jesus, rooted in love, trust, and grace.
